History of Puppetry
in Canada

Peggy Specht

Peggy Specht (née Beirnes) began to work in puppetry after training at Toronto's Central Technical School, and in 1942 toured the United States with Muriel Heddle's Royal Canadian Puppet Ballet. In 1959, Specht studied at a hospital in Weston, Ontario. Drawing on her puppetry background, she used puppets with children in hospitals and developed a unique form of rod puppet with flexible rubber tubing and papier-maché head.
